Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the 20th Whistler BioBlitz last week another species-filled success! BioBlitz scientists presented to elementary school students then blitzed forests and wetlands throughout Whistler.

Our goal is to introduce students to all the fascinating animals, plants, fungi, and other organisms that make Whistler home. This year we presented to 22 classes and about 500 students at Spring Creek and Myrtle Philip Schools. Topics included pollinators, reptiles, food chains, animal tracks, a Wild Things scavenger hunt, and Whistler’s amazing wildlife. Thanks to the visiting and local scientists who volunteered their time to present.

 

This year’s theme was Beaver Blitz in recognition of the critical importance of beavers in creating wetlands. On Thursday night, Bob Brett presented to almost 100 people about the importance of beaver dams and other reasons to love beavers. We then conducted biodiversity surveys in beaver ponds over the weekend, results of which will be collated over the coming weeks and months.
